I was looking through my cellphone's address book the other day, and I realized that I didn't want to talk to most of the people on it.
That's probably not a great way to start a journal entry about how happy I've been lately.
I chickened out on the hair cutting thing. Maybe this weekend? I think I have a date Saturday or Sunday - I'm not sure if I want to show up with my hair freshly weedwacked. Though that would probably be a good way to learn a lot about the girl, very quickly.
That's one nice thing about the winter: almost no yardwork. And, the yardwork I do is actually necessary, like clearing gutters, as opposed to stuff like cutting grass, which I've always thought was a bit too violent for me to really justify.
Been reading a lot, as usual. The
2006 Best American Comics Anthology (edited by Harvey Pekar), another few pages from
Gravity's Rainbow, a lot of medieval lit and Shakespeare (who I hate, completely irrationally), some stuff on how to be a journalist (I've been faking it so far, and I think they're starting to catch on), whatever music magazines I can get my hands on (mainly
Paste,
Performer, and
Stomp and Stammer), some comics I'd been meaning to catch up on, and an AP style guide.
I'd like to be reading more theory stuff, but school (and the classes I'm taking this semester) has not been very inspirational in that area. I'm taking two 200-level courses. Our teacher likes to ask us if we know what words like "humility" and "shrew" mean. I want to raise my hand and be like, "excuse me professor, but I'm currently hovering around level 39 on freerice - could we skip these vocab lessons?". [I may actually be at level 29, it's been a while since I played.]
And I saw Fiery Furnaces last night. They were awesome, which I hadn't expected - most of their music is based around really complex studio tricks like songs with 40 layers (some of which are reverse versions of other layers), so I expected the transition to live shows to be a bit rocky. It is rocky, but whoever the hell sings for them really makes up for the lack of cool electronic doodads on stage. As we were leaving the theatre, Zack taps me on the shoulder and says, solemnly, "I would hit that". I assume he was talking about Fiery Furnaces' lead singer, but he might as well have been talking about the pure waves of sonic awesome the whole band channeled throughout their set.
Lenny's Bar has "Japan Party!" listed for Friday, February 29th. From what I can tell, it's a party ("a dance party!") where we all show up dressed as characters from Japanese movies. I'm trying to think of something really geeky to dress up as - maybe I'll glue two fake eyebrows on and be one of the guys from
FLCL. Bean (who works at Lenny's and The Drunken Unicorn, and just had a show at Beep Beep Gallery) will be working his projector magic; Judi Chicago, Modern Society, and Sonen will play music to get yer vertebrae jumping.
You seem like a cool cat - you should probably check it out.
